The moment Nai Palm began singing my jaw dropped and stayed that way until it was over. “Building a Ladder” is the first song I ever heard by Hiatus Kaiyote, a band that would quickly become one of my favorites. She feels that because music has helped her, it is her duty as a musician to “be a sanctuary for other people just like music has been for me.” On the track by track commentary for the album, singer and guitarist Nai Palm says that it’s “a feel good song,” and that it’s a song that she wrote when she was suffering for others who are suffering in the hopes of overcoming by uplifting. This song was originally not going to be included but after spending a day recording it, the band felt like they should show off their work. “Building a Ladder,” is the final track from their second album which was released in 2015 called Choose Your Weapon. ![]() Music by Hiatus has been nominated for two Grammies and a pitched-up intro of “Building a Ladder” was the intro to Drake’s song “Free Smoke.” ![]() The band identifies their sound as “future soul”, a term that seems to encompass R&B, hip hop, and neo-soul influences. Hiatus Kaiyote is a quartet out of Melbourne, Australia, composed of vocals, guitar, bass, drums, and keys. ![]()
